Moving to a new state
Pick the state you're moving to for example moving costs, tax basics, license deadlines and a new-resident checklist.
Good to know: 9 states have no broad state income tax on wages (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming), and 5 have no statewide sales tax (Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon). Most states expect new residents to switch their driver's license within about 10 to 90 days. Each guide below names the agency to confirm with.

What every interstate move needs
- A licensed mover. Companies that move household goods across state lines must be registered with the FMCSA and have a USDOT number you can look up.
- A written estimate. Ask for a binding or not-to-exceed estimate based on an in-home or video survey, not a phone guess.
- New-state paperwork. Driver's license, vehicle title and registration, voter registration, and a part-year state tax return in many cases.
Estimate your own move with the moving cost calculator, and keep the timeline on track with the moving checklist.
